What’s in a (middle) name?

Jacqui and I questioned whether a middle name was even necessary and considered not giving Henry one. But we still tossed a few suggestions back and forth anyway, not really liking anything, until one night I suggested Clyde.

We think it sounds good as a whole: Henry Clyde Cousin. And looks good written, Clyde sharing letters with the first and last names.

Neither of us personally knows anyone with the name and it’s not after any particular Clyde. I think it may have been in my head because of a song in heavy rotation on my iPod during the pregnancy.

“Bonnie and Clyde” is a duet by noted French perv, Serge Gainsbourg and French bombshell, Brigitte Bardot.

The video clearly drew inspiration from the Warren Beatty/Faye Dunaway movie released the year before and both are, of course, about the outlaws, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. But Henry Clyde isn’t named after Clyde Barrow, who by all accounts, ruined his own life and Bonnie’s (among others).

It’s more like how flamboyant, former NY Knicks point guard, Walt “Clyde” Frazier adopted the nickname because he liked Beatty’s fashion sense in the film. To me it’s a name that suggests style, creativity and freedom.

  1. Very interesting ! I enjoyed hearing the French song even though my French is not good enough for translation. I hadn’t heard that song before. But I’m glad Henry Clyde is not named for Clyde Barrow. When I first heard Henry’s middle name was Clyde I wasn’t sure if I liked it, but you know, it’s been growing on me and now I like it and think it suits his entire name. I have a friend here in Houston, a beautiful blonde-haired woman named Clydell. She was named for her dad, Clyde L. (his middle initial was L). I’ve always liked Clydell and her unusual name that seems perfect for her. Just so, Henry’s middle name now seems right for him. And I like that the name suggests creativity and freedom and style to ya’ll, all great qualities we hope Henry will possess. Well, just look at him, he’s already got style ! Like his Mom! And think of the “Lotus Power” pose – he’s already got creativity, too! Like his Dad.! Love from Mom
PS – I’m glad ya’ll gave Henry a middle name – very useful in case there are other Henry Cousin’s around. Besides, Grandpa wasn’t given a middle name, but evidently wanted one, because he chose his confirmation name, Bernard at about age 12, which he used as his middle name (or the initial “B”) for the rest of his life.
